5 Hipster Rings by B/C Designs | Jewelry Blog

Do I hate hipsters? No. I don’t hate people for such broad reasons. I try not to hate. Although it’s really hard for me to not hate Tonya Harding, even after all these years. (She never went to jail for a day. NOT A DAY. That is gross to me.)

The fundamental question of 2013: WHAT IS A HIPSTER?

It’s a catch-22. Hipsters defy classification. But if you really try, you can identify some common traits. They are free-spirited and open-minded. This is interpreted in embracing fashion, but in a “I don’t care what anyone else thinks” type of what. In this way, when you wear stuff that you know other people might go WTF about, you’re already on your way to being a hipster. Most hipsters love expressing themselves, and are arty in some way. They will try new trends (that become trends, but they aren’t trends when the hipster does them – or if they are, then they are a more generic “wannabe” hipster… see: people who shop at Urban Outfitters.)

  • Hipsters are often found in tight pants or leggings. Beat-up jeans also work. The more holes/tears the better. (Even in the winter. It’s kind of dumb.)
  • Their counter-culture thinking can be displayed by wearing vintage outfits, large retro glasses, and thrift store finds.
  • Hair is often exaggerated in some way – either dirty, shaggy, dyed in bright colors, or having blunt cuts. (When you go into mohawk territory you have someone verging on punk.)
  • They are in their late teens, 20’s, or early 30’s.

Urban Dictionary has a great definition of hipster. I’ll pick out a few parts

“Although “hipsterism” is really a state of mind,it is also often intertwined with distinct fashion sensibilities. Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumer

“Although hipsters are technically conformists within their own subculture, in comparison to the much larger mainstream mass, they are pioneers and leaders of the latest cultural trends and ideals. For example, the surge of jeans made to look old and worn (i.e. “distressed”), that have become prevalent at stores such as The Gap, American Eagle, Abercrombie and Fitch, and Hollister, were originally paraded by hipsters who shopped in thrift stores years before such clothing items were mass produced and sold to the mainstream consumer. The true irony here is that many of the detractors of hipster culture are in fact unknowingly following a path that hipsters have carved out years before them.

“Because of the rise of various online photo-blog and social networking sites, insights into urban hipster culture is reaching sheltered suburban audiences at an exponential rate. Cultural “norms” have been deconstructed by hipster culture as a whole.

B/C Designs Sterling Silver Doppio Ring

  • I’m basing this assessment on my younger sister who lives in NYC, and all her hipster friends. They wear tons of rings, and there’s always one or two that are HUGE. (They’re also not afraid to mix metals, which is still sometimes hard for me, haha. #NERDYWAYS #RULEFOLLOWER) Even if I don’t consider a giant ring to be mandatory for my mix, I appreciate them a lot when they’re pretty. And this one? I love this simple design, because you can wear it anywhere, anytime. If you were only going to own one ring, wear this one.

B/C Designs Brass Infinity Ring

  • The idea that it’s brass instantly makes it hipster-chic. (Even though it’s nothing like a brass knuckle ring, it gives that instant connotation of bad-assery.) And even though it’s an infinity ring…which CAN be cheesy…this one doesn’t at all look like an infinity ring until you point it out to someone. Then it’s like OOOH. Plus, it’s an interesting shape, and heavy – great to wear on a middle finger or pointer finger…maybe even layer with another if you’re feeling like having your fingers weigh you down. (Some people MUST like that, even though I can’t figure out why anyone would want a ring on every finger, and then two on the thumb….but, speaking of, you could also wear this on your thumb if you get the right size. I’d kind of like that, actually…)

bamboo ring, bamboo rings, hipster rings, cool jewelry, b/c designs

B/C Designs Bambu White Bronze Ring

  • They may call it “bambu” but it looks like a piece of bamboo. Bamboo rings are …about nature, and therefore cool! (Hipster logic! IDK.) Well, the reason this is “hipster” is because it’s very unexpected and so literal that it elevates it to a cool status. Hipsters are fairly cool (in their minds they’re the COOLEST, of course.)
