I’ve seen the fleur-de-lis around a lot, and always thought it was a pretty design element. I’ve never really given much thought into what it WAS. Well, googling around I’ve found out that it is “fleur” is French for flower and “Lis” is French for Lily. So it’s a French Lily! Often this has been used as a symbol in coats of arms, flags and such. Something I think that’s interesting is that Wiki says, “In building and architecture, the fleur-de-lis is often placed on top of iron fence posts, as a pointed defense against intruders. It may ornament any tip, point or post with a decorative flourish, for instance, on finials, the arms of a cross, or the point of a gable.” In this way, wearing a Fleur-de-Lis ring is kind of like protection. Not that I think you should lunge your finger at anyone, but it’s got a point and it does convey a kind of ‘I can fend for myself’ type of mentality.It also has a ‘royal’ mentality that it projects. Plus, it’s so pretty!

In mathematics, the Fibonacci [fib-uh-nach-y] numbers are a sequence of numbers named after Leonardo of Pisa, known as Fibonacci. He wrote about this very fascinating sequence in his book Liber Abaci in 1202. The sequence starts out 0,1,1,2,3,5,8 and just continues. It is a sequence that can be seen throughout nature.

This ring was inspired by the fibonacci sequence. The pattern of beads is 1,1,2,3. It is made with sterling silver wire and accent beads and 4mm hematite.

The birth stone for December is - you might have already guessed it – blue topaz! Blue topaz comes in three different basic shades: Sky (the lightest blue), Swiss and London Blue (the darkest blue). Sagittariuses are lucky because this is such a beautiful gemstone to have as their birthstone.

The word “Topaz” is Sanskrit for “Tapas” meaning fire. People used to believe that blue topaz had cooling powers. If you have a heated temper, it might be wise to wear some blue topaz and use it as a reminder to cool down. That is, people don’t only wear blue topaz as a birth stone. While fine jewelry doesn’t follow strict jewelry trends (who could afford to do that except for Ivanka Trump and Tyra Banks?) it does move in directions. Right now, you may have noticed that fancy yellow diamonds are a majorly popular jewelry item. A yellow diamond (the Tiffany Yellow Diamond) was featured with Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys. Of course there are other famous diamonds in other colors such as orange when it comes to the famous pumpkin diamond that Halle Berry wore at the 2002 Oscars when she won for “Monsters Ball”. (Which was a great, if disturbing, movie.) I didn’t notice the diamond then – which is surprising considering how big it was.

When you buy an expensive piece of jewelry the only thing you need to know from ring buying guides is that you have to love it. I mean, really love it. Not just a casual ‘oh, you’re pretty enough’. Pretty enough? No, no, no! It has to be…it has to make you go ‘Ooohh, I need to have that and I’m willing to stop shopping for a month if I have to do it!’ You have to love it enough to wear it forever. This sometimes means buying a more expensive piece rather than one that you like less but is less costly. But you have to factor in cost per wear, if you wear one ring more rather than going out and buying other things – you’re actually saving money. How about that? Yea, I like that idea, too!

Yellow diamond rings can be so beautiful, so let’s see what is out there that is worth purchasing when it comes to fancy yellow diamond rings and canary diamond rings for sale. Pairing a canary diamond with white gold is popular and the best way to show off the fancy yellow diamonds. More than that, white gold is also very popular and much more affordable than platinum (score!). So while we search for yellow diamond rings, we’ll also be on the lookout for white gold rings. I don’t see many yellow diamond rings for sale paired with yellow gold, anyway. If you want one of those…you’ll have to do more searching.

Audrey Hepburn’s Yellow Diamond (Five Yellow Diamond Engagement Rings)

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE the Audrey Hepburn movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I’ve probably seen it about, oh, 150 times. And even through all of that I never knew anything about the story between the yellow Tiffany diamond and Audrey in the movie. But when I was researching famous diamonds I came across the Tiffany Yellow Diamond. It turns out that the Tiffany Yellow Diamond has only been worn by two women – and one of them was the lovely Audrey Hepburn for Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I believe she wore the diamond on a necklace in the movie. But I am not positive. What I do know is that the Tiffany Yellow Diamond is one of the largest yellow diamonds in the entire world.

In the above Breakfast at Tiffanys publicity photo you see the yellow diamond set in the “Bird on the Rock” brooch, designed by the famous Tiffany jeweler Jean Schlumberger.

What is one item you associate with the color yellow? The SUN! Here is a youtube video of the Glee mashup the girls did on the wonderful Fox show. They mashed up the songs Halo and Walking on SUNSHINE! I cannot get enough of this song.

Normally one would wait until spring or summer to talk about butterfly rings, but I was inspired to post about them because I was watching Ugly Betty on Hulu.com. They had incorporated a feature piece on insect jewelry for Mode magazine, and of course butterflies are arguably the prettiest insects. Butterflies also have a good transformative story to tell – which worked well with Betty’s plot. Anyway! I took a couple screencaps of Ugly Betty to show you one particular scene which was so pretty – it involved an older woman who had a house full of butterflies. Can you imagine? I get excited when I just see ONE butterfly, if I saw that many I’d be so psyched. (Of course I’m certain these were mostly if not all CGI butterflies.)
